15 Things You Need to Know Before Your First Disney Cruise

Booking your first Disney Cruise is exciting—and if you've never cruised before, you probably have a lot of questions.
As a Disney Cruise specialist, I help families plan Disney Cruise vacations every day, and there are a few things I wish every first-time cruiser knew before stepping onboard. These tips can save you time, stress, and even money while helping you get the most out of your vacation.

1. A Travel Agent Doesn't Cost You Anything
One of the biggest misconceptions about Disney Cruise Line is that booking directly with Disney saves money vs booking with a travel agent. It doesn't. Disney pays travel advisors a commission for helping guests plan their vacations. Whether you book directly with Disney or through a travel advisor, your cruise fare is the same.
The difference is that when you work with an experienced Disney Cruise specialist, you have someone helping you choose the right ship, itinerary, stateroom category, dining time, and transportation options. You'll also have someone available to answer questions and help if problems arise before your trip.
2. Some Travel Agents Offer Onboard Credit
Not all travel advisors provide the same benefits. Many Disney-focused agents (like me!) offer onboard credit simply for booking through us. Think of onboard credit as spending money loaded onto your cruise account that can be used for merchandise, spa treatments, beverages, specialty dining, and more.
For my clients, I offer up to $1,000 in onboard credit depending on the cruise and stateroom booked. Before booking directly, it's worth seeing what extra value a travel advisor can provide.
3. You Should Have a Passport
While many Disney cruises departing from U.S. ports allow U.S. citizens to travel with a birth certificate and government-issued ID, I strongly recommend obtaining a passport. Why? Because if you experience a medical emergency, miss the ship in port, or need to fly home unexpectedly, a passport can make the possible.
4. Travel Insurance Is Worth Every Penny
If there's one thing I encourage every client to purchase, it's travel insurance. Travel insurance can help protect your vacation investment if you need to cancel before departure, experience travel delays, encounter a medical emergency, or require emergency transportation. A Disney Cruise is a significant investment. Travel insurance helps protect that investment and provides peace of mind throughout your trip.
5. Complete Online Check-In as Soon as Possible
This is one of the biggest mistakes first-time cruisers make. Disney Cruise Line assigns Port Arrival Times during the online check-in process. Generally speaking, the earlier you complete online check-in, the better your chances of securing an earlier arrival time. An earlier Port Arrival Time means you'll board sooner and start enjoying your vacation earlier. So be sure to mark it on your calendar and be ready when your window opens.

6. Soda Is Included
One pleasant surprise for many first-time Disney cruisers is that soda is included. You'll find complimentary self-serve beverage stations on the pool deck offering fountain sodas, coffee, tea, and other beverages throughout your cruise. Unlike some cruise lines, you won't need to purchase a soda package.
7. Prepaid Gratuities Don't Cover Everything
Disney Cruise Line allows guests to prepay gratuities for their dining team and stateroom host, which is incredibly convenient. However, many first-time cruisers don't realize there are still situations where you'll want cash available.
It's helpful to bring small bills for:
Porters handling luggage at the cruise terminal
Room service deliveries
Port adventure guides
Transportation providers before or after your cruise
Having some cash on hand can make these situations much easier.
8. Keep Medications in Their Original Containers
Always pack medications in your carry-on luggage and keep prescription medications in their original labeled containers. If your checked luggage is delayed or inspected, you'll still have access to your medication. This is especially important when traveling internationally.
9. Fish Extenders Are a Fun Disney Cruise Tradition
If you've spent any time in Disney Cruise Facebook groups, you've probably heard people mention Fish Extenders. A Fish Extender is a hanging organizer placed outside your stateroom door. Families who join a Fish Extender group exchange small gifts with one another throughout the cruise. Participation is completely optional, but many families enjoy the extra magic and community it creates.
10. Decorating Your Door Is Part of the Fun
One of the things that makes Disney Cruise Line unique is the creativity guests bring to their stateroom doors. Because the doors are magnetic, many families create personalized magnets featuring their names, favorite Disney characters, special occasions, or sailing dates.
Not only is it fun, but it also makes your stateroom easier to find after a long day of activities.

11. Book Activities the Moment Your Booking Window Opens
Some onboard experiences and shore excursions can fill quickly.
Popular reservations include:
Port Adventures
Castaway Cay and Lookout Cay cabanas
Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique
Palo
Remy
Enchanté
Spa treatments
Beverage tastings
Knowing when your booking window opens and being prepared can help you secure the experiences most important to your family. Or, if you're working with a travel agent like me, we'll take care of that for you!
12. Download the Disney Cruise Line App Before You Sail
The Disney Cruise Line Navigator App becomes one of your most important tools onboard.
You'll use it to:
View daily activities
Check dining information
Browse menus
Communicate with family members
Receive important updates
Downloading it before embarkation day saves time and makes the boarding process smoother. Plus it has a really fun countdown to your cruise that my kids love checking every day!
13. Your Stateroom Won't Be Ready Right Away
Many first-time cruisers assume they can access their room immediately after boarding. In reality, staterooms are typically unavailable until early afternoon while the crew prepares them for arriving guests.
Pack a carry-on bag with:
Swimsuits
Sunscreen
Medications
Cruise documents
Phone chargers
Any valuables
That way, you can start enjoying the ship right away without waiting for your luggage.
14. The Muster Drill Is Mandatory
Before the ship can sail, every guest must complete the required safety drill. The process is much easier than it used to be and generally takes only a few minutes, but it is mandatory.
Arriving to your assigned station on time and following the cast members' directions cafefully expedites the process for everyone onboard.
15. Book Your Placeholder Before You Get Off the Ship
This is one of my favorite Disney Cruise tips. Before disembarking, consider booking a Placeholder reservation. A Placeholder allows you to lock in savings on a future Disney Cruise without selecting specific sailing dates right away. You'll have up to 2 years from your sail date after returning home to decide when and where you'd like to sail (sailings must be no more than 2 years from the date of your initial cruise). For families who think they may want to cruise with Disney again—and many do—this can be a fantastic value. Plus, the deposit you pay onboard is fully refundable if you change your mind!
Final Thoughts
Your first Disney Cruise is unlike any other vacation. Between Broadway-style shows, character experiences, incredible dining, private island destinations, and Disney's legendary service, it's easy to understand why so many families become repeat cruisers. A little preparation goes a long way toward making your vacation smooth, stress-free, and magical.
